What Is Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce didn't become popular until the 19th century. Cranberries, along with concord grapes and blueberries are widely known as the only fruits native to the United States, which is primarily the reason why cranberry sauce is part of the American tradition of thanksgiving.  

This home made cranberry sauce is a whole heck of a lot healthier than pre-made cranberry sauce, with less sugar, and natural ingredients, delivering a flavorful, fresh sweet/tart flavor.

Vegan Cranberry Sauce Ingredients

  • 12 oz (1 bag) fresh cranberries
  • 1 lemon (zested)
  • 1 orange (zested)
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup maple syrup (depending on sweetness preference)
  • 2/3 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Vegan Cranberry Sauce Recipe Directions

  • Since the fresh cranberries and pat dry with a paper towel
  • In a pan over medium heat, combine the maple syrup, washed and dried cranberries, the orange juice, and ground cinnamon. Bring to a boil then set the heat to medium low stirring occasionally (8-10 minutes). Note: If the mixture gets too thick, add up to 1/4 cup water for consistency purposes.
  • While that is cooking, zest 1 medium orange and 1 lemon.
  • Once the sauce has thickened, take off the heat and let it cool. Stir in the zest of the lemon and orange.
  • Store in a container and serve cold, the sauce will stay for ~2 weeks.
