Tell us a little about you...

Hi! My name is Alex. I am 19 years old and a competitive CrossFit athlete.

Where did your fitness/athletic journey begin?

I have always loved sports and fitness. I grew up playing almost every sport but largely focused on Lacrosse. I began dabbling in the weight room my freshman year of high school but hated the idea of being “bulky”. I naturally had very defined arms and I didn’t want to make them any bigger. I mainly stuck to doing some version of leg day and a million minutes on the elliptical. Thankfully, that didn’t last very long.

My sophomore year of high school I took a lifting class to fulfill a P.E credit. Once I realized that I was actually pretty strong, my whole mentality changed. I didn’t care abou my aesthetics anymore- I just wanted to lift more than the guys. I also noticed huge improvements on the lacrosse field. I was faster, stronger, and overall more conditioned.

My teacher saw potential in me and referred me to the local CrossFit Gym in my area. I started doing classes and loved it! Once I found out that it could be competitive- I never looked back.

Tell us a bit about competing - what is that experience like for you?

I have always had a competitive spirit growing up. Athletics was the only are of my life that I had control over. Competing in CrossFit is so fun because there is always something to get better at. If you improve one movement, there are about 60 others waiting to be worked on.

What’s your favorite part about being a fitness and nutrition coach?

My favorite part of being a coach is building relationships with people and seeing them progress in various areas of their lives. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing someone work hard and achieve what they set their mind to- I feel very fortunate to be trusted in that journey.

Do you have a go-to cheat meal? Or a couple?

Oh man… I am a BIG foodie and could probably list 10 different meals that make me drool. A couple of my favorite indulgences would be a plain cheese quesadilla with LOADS of sour cream or a greasy burger with French fries and a ton of pink sauce!

Tell us a little bit about what you eat on a daily basis

As an athlete I eat a lot of carbs and really focus on eating well rounded meals in to fuel my training! I love breakfast foods so a lot of my meals will be breakfast themed! I typically start my day with a scramble of eggs/egg whites, goat cheese, lots of rice/sweet potatoes, and zucchini. After training I love to eat overnight oats with vanilla or chocolate whey protein. Usually my other meals are scrambles as well and I just rotate different carb, fat, veggie, and protein sources.

What gets out you out of bed and into the gym every day?

Most of the time going to the gym is easy. I love it. I love the endorphins. I love the community. I love knowing I am getting better. And I love pursuing a goal. On the days where I dont feel like going- I like to think of the quote: “Discipline eats motivation for breakfast.” I most definitely have days where exercise is the last thing I want to do. However, I want to make it to the CrossFit Games. I know that if I’m not putting in the work, someone else is.

What are some of your athletic goals?

My biggest goal is to make it to the CrossFit Games. I would also like to do the splits one day. We will see which happens first haha.

What’s the biggest fear you’ve faced and how’d you overcome it?

The biggest fear I have is losing the people I love. My parents struggled with substance abuse throughout my childhood. The uncertainty of their actions and the consequences of their actions caused me a lot of anxiety and fear in my life. I never knew what curveball was gonna come my way next. My relationship with Jesus and pursuing my faith has allowed me to overcome that fear.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I got married at 18! I know it sounds nuts haha, but if you know me it wouldn’t phase you. Ive always been an old soul.

What do you do outside of training/coaching?

Outside of training and coaching, I love spending time with my family and friends. I love cooking, dancing, and being in the sunshine!

Tell us a little about your training regimen - how do you prioritize your performance with the rest of your life?

I train 3-5 hours 5 days a week. My training usually consists of a mono-structural cardio piece, strength work, skill work, a metcon, and some accessory work. Luckily my friends and family are very supportive of my goals so it is fairly easy to balance performance with the rest of my life. I think it is important to have and enjoy a life outside of CrossFit so I make sure to make time for the people and activities I love.
