New Movement Standards for 18.0 – The 2018 Crossfit Open

The most recent announcement about 18.0 workout directly from the man, Dave Castro himself, has stirred the community for yet another new update on movement standards.

Castro went live online, surrounded by some of the world’s best CrossFit’s elite athletes, including Lucas Esslinger, Tia-Clair Toomey, Scott Panchik, and Dan Bailey. With the world watching, the 18.0 workout was announced as an additional workout not correlated with the regular Open. Respectively, Tia-Clair Toomey finished around 3:04 and Scott Panchik finished around 2:59.

While the format isn’t foreign to the masses of the CrossFit community, the 21-15-9 structural breakdown provides an opportunity to highlight the new standards for the burpee and dumbbell snatch movements. Easy? Think again. You may need to undo some muscle memory with these new requirements. Here’s the nitty gritty:

18.0 Workout
For Time
DB Snatch & Burpee

2018 Movement Standards – Burpee

So long single steppers. This standard requires that you may only step forward or back with one leg if you are doing the workout scaled. Rx’d athletes must hop back into the burpee and hop forward with both legs at the same time to count the rep.

Additionally, there’s a lateral hop movement over the dumbbell. While the hop over the length of the DB isn’t terrible, an additional mind game for the athlete will be jumping over the DB with their feet in-line with it before doing so.

2018 Movement Standards – DB Snatch (Men: 50lb Women: 35lb)

For this movement standard, an athlete must switch the dumbbell from one hand to the other no higher than eye level. In 2017, the DB standard allowed for an athlete to switch hands on the DB while still overhead. Adios overhead transition for 18.0.

Our Take

If we’re being honest, the majority of the individuals that sign up for the CrossFit Open are doing it for fun. There’s never been anything wrong with scaling a workout, and as long as the right movement standards are being implemented with judges, most people are going to Open nights to enjoy a little BBQ and Beers post-WOD.

Nonetheless, best of luck to all our readers joining in on the Open fun in 2018! May the force be with you and don’t forget to take a moment and remember why you started CrossFit in the first place.
