Tell us a little about you...
I'm Richard Essig and I'm a full-time athlete and coach at CrossFit Hershey in Annville, PA.
What are some of your athletic/fitness/life accolades that you’re proud of?
I am proud to say I reached one of my goals by going to individual regionals (Atlantic super regional) in 2017. I prefer team competitions though and have had amazing experiences at all levels of competition like WZA and Granite Games with people I consider friends way beyond the gym. In training others, I'm proud to say I've worked with disabled Veterans, cancer survivors, a legally blind man, D1 athletes, and everyone in between.
What have been some trying moments during your professional career, or life in general, that have shaped you into the man you are today?
First, above all, I credit the time I realized my parents, like all humans, aren't perfect at the moment I realized it was up to me to decide who I would be and how I would treat others. It's tattooed on my arm! Also, I fell in love with coaching and CrossFit while in college and deciding to pursue that route instead of my far more lucrative degree field was a risk that many thoughts were an odd choice.
The overlap is that fitness was the avenue I found to best serve others and treat them as the awesome folks they are. My first coaching job was almost full time but unpaid, while finishing school and working as well and it just clicked: If I am willing to do this for free, it's probably worth pursuing!
What is your best piece of advice about staying on track with your health and fitness?
Simple, small changes and choices across time make the big, sustainable changes. Don't rush and don't think you failed if you aren't perfect every day.
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
I love punk rock music. I am most alive flying around a mosh pit with a bunch of sweaty fellow concert-goers.
What is your favorite part about being a coach/trainer?
The relationships. My 1 on 1 clients often become friendships I truly value. For my youth athletes, it's seeing them grow confident and strong in their bodies. For my CrossFit classes, it's giving people an amazing group environment to thrive and enjoy an hour of taking care of themselves, and their wellbeing.
Why do you choose to fuel with Swolverine?
The simplified but potent approach of including only necessary, stackable ingredients, that fuel performance. Diet will always be most important, but the right supplements can move that needle even further and allow us all to achieve more, get stronger and recover better. Swolverine doesn't waste your time or money with phony claims or blends.
