Tell us a little about you…
My name is Maria Litwiler and I initially reached out to Swolverine in the hopes of pursuing some kind of partnership. Why? Simple. SWOLVERINE's values, ethics, and brand representation fall closely in line with the way I live my life as both an individual and an athlete. I’m a working professional, I’m not a full-time athlete.
What do you do in your profession?
I have slowly transitioned my career toward health and fitness coaching. After graduating with a B.S. in health science and M.S. in speech-language pathology., I worked as a medical speech pathologist for 6 years. In that time I discovered my patients, and even peers were misinformed and unaware of the control they could have over their health.
Now, I feel more value in keeping people free from the chronic diseases that I've witnessed firsthand in the hospital. While I'm still a licensed therapist, I now am a certified personal trainer and CrossFit L1 trainer with big plans to continue my education in functional health and nutrition. This has been where I find my happiness.
How did you discover your love for CrossFit?
I was an NCAA Division I rower and when I was in grad school I stumbled across CrossFit. It immediately became a craving of mine because it fueled that competitive spirit I’ve always filled with sports throughout my life.
Flash forward, I earned myself a spot as a rookie on Team Raw Training competing on the floor at the 2015 Atlantic Regionals. We finished 6th – talk about heartbreak. I felt more motivated than ever to become the best athlete I could to pursue my dream of competing at the CrossFit Games.
Team or Individual, which direction did you go from there?
Currently, I've been training conservatively while dealing with a back injury lingering since my rowing days. I've found my injury has helped me connect with clients in my box who also have injuries themselves. It hasn't been an easy road, but I've grown to realize that competing does not define me, and God has bigger plans for me to work through Him. I'll still find my way to the competition floor when I'm able, having fun in the process!
Tell us a little more about your Team experience...
There’s something so unique and amazing about being on a team that you just can’t quite grasp when you’re an individual. Alas, RAW Training pursued Regionals as primarily a rookie team and we placed 13th. I was proud and honored to compete alongside those girls. I'm pleased to say we earned our spot at the 2018 CrossFit Games
What does a partnership with SWOLVERINE mean to you?
I want to be better at all aspects of fitness and that includes being a well-rounded, grounded and motivating athlete and individual. Through my health, attitude, passion, and abilities, I believe SWOLVERINE compliments my abilities and aspirations. I work very hard to tell myself and show my self that “I AM good enough” which leads me to want to help others discover this within their own selves.
SWOLVERINE reflects many of my same values, and I believe that together, through proper supplementation and the right nutritional lifestyle. Together we can show the world that anything is possible with a little extra heart, determination, and inspiration. I love being a part of this team, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
