How old are you? 


Where were you born/where did you grow up?

I was born in Chicago, IL. I lived right outside of Chicago until I was around 8 years old, where I then moved right outside of Philadelphia. Grew up in a small town called Bryn Athyn, PA.

You were a big athlete growing up, even at the collegiate level – What Inspired you to pursue CrossFit at a competitive level?

Well once I graduated college, I played soccer in some co-ed adult leagues, but actually ended up fracturing my ankle. I was out of the gym and off the field for a while recovering. My sister came home from serving overseas and told me she was taking me to my first CrossFit class. I went and fell in love with the sport. Mind you, I didn’t know what would come from it. I was just the average Crossfitter - I just wanted to “get in shape”. It wasn’t until my first individual competition in May of 2015, that I ended up taking first place, that I thought… “ok, maybe this could be something”. I ended up switching gyms and coaches and by changing things up, I surrounded myself with all the right people. The new environment and people really pushed me and helped me get better, but also opened up new doors and introduced me to other athletes who inevitably ended up changing my life!

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?  

In the last year, I’ve had a few, very influential people enter my life and they’ve all, in one way or another, given me really good advice in varying forms. One of the most solid pieces of advice I’ve been given is to stay humble, keep your head down and just work hard. Oh, and to trust myself and my abilities - confidence can go a long way.

In your experiences what have you learned that has made the biggest positive change in your life? What are the keys to success and the struggles that you have encountered?

I think this goes hand in hand with the above question. Trusting myself is a huge thing. It still amazes me how far we (Team Parallax) went in 8 months, how much I improved in that much time.. etc. It’s really important to believe in yourself.. because if you don’t, who will?

I think another key to *success* in all of this (even though, what really is success ;)) is to realize that you literally are never going to run out of things to learn. I say it regularly, that I still don’t know shit. I think that’s why I love CrossFit so much: I am always, literally daily, learning something new about the movements, the sport itself, or about myself.

Have fun with it all. The moment I am not having fun anymore, I’ll find something else to do. But for now, I love this.. every-damn-day. Even when I *hate* it, I still am having fun. 

What advice do you want to give others who want to make changes in their life and fitness journey?

You just need to figure out what it is that you love, set some goals, and surround yourself with people who are supportive and can be in your corner. It doesn’t happen overnight. I think some people get frustrated and they think these types of things happen quickly. Part of the beauty of this all is the journey.

What motivates you to be the fittest women on earth?

Ok, now I sound like I am repeating myself. But the fact that this sport is always humbling me and always challenging me. That’s why I want to continue to improve, to better myself, to inspire others to do the same. If I can get to the CrossFit Games as I do those things...well.. that’s the dream. Don’t get me wrong, it’s my number 1 goal to make it to the Games as an individual.. and I am working every single day on that goal. But I think it’s super important to also to make sure that there are goals and things in the every day that motivate us as well.

What is your favorite WOD? And how has CrossFit impacted your life?

Favorite workout is probably DT.. I love that babell.

Crossfit 100% saved my life. Like I mentioned, I started crossfitting to be in *better* shape. But I was drinking a lot, I was eating like shit, I was partying and staying out late and was honestly pretty unhappy. The gym became my happy place. Specially when I really dialed in my nutrition and started focusing even more on the sport.. it changed my life.

What’s a normal Friday night look like in the life of Kelsey Kiel?

Typically it’s the MOST lazy Friday night ever. I’ll cook myself dinner, hang around, maybe watch a movie.. go to sleep so I can get up and train the next day. (literally the biggest loser, but what can ya do ;))

You’re also an athlete for Doughnuts & Deadlifts – How has Krissy and DNDL impacted you?

Krissy changed my life. I actually started working with her as my nutrition coach long before I was a DNDL athlete. As soon as I knew I wanted to dedicate more time to this sport, I knew dialing in my nutrition would be a huge part of it. I was drinking a lot, partying, eating bad foods. I didn’t know what I was really doing. I bought Krissy’s book and started doing my own nutrition. It worked for a bit, I lost about 10 lbs on my own, but knew I needed her coaching to really get the most out of it all. She took me on as a client and I lost another 35-ish pounds, yet still added multiple pounds to almost all of my lifts. When she asked me if I wanted to be part of DNDL, I was in shock. The company, what it stands for, is what I hope to embody every single day. Eat - Lift - Live.. it’s all so real and relevant and there wasn’t another company I wanted to help represent than Doughnuts and Deadlifts. So, Krissy and the company exponentially impacted my life in the best of ways.

What is it like living in the Traup Hause with the Krissy Mae Cagney, Chloie Jönsson, and Quiana Welch?

It's a rollercoaster, but in the best way. There is never a dull moment. Well, there is, because we spend a lot of time doing puzzles and watching Skin Wars…but no, really, I 100% lucked out when I moved to Reno. Each of us brings our own personality to the house. Yes, it's tough sometimes to live in a house with 4 women, but it's helped us all work on our communication with one another and I couldn’t ask for a better three babes to live with. I feel lucky every single day that I have them in my life.  

What is something that people would be surprised to learn about you?

Most people don’t believe me when I tell them I’ve seen 210lbs on the scale. Even when I weighed that, people didn’t believe me. But, it’s true. Having said that… I didn’t lose the weight overnight. I worked really hard, and was really dedicated/consistent for a long time. I still struggle with eating/food issues, but it's something I work on every day.

What sets you apart from everyone else?

I am one of the most stubborn people. I have a goal, and it may take a long time to reach, but I am going to work my ass off to try to reach that goal no matter that it takes. “it is impossible to live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well have not lived at all, in which case you have failed by default.’

I am going to make sure to live hard and live well :)
