Tell us a little about you…

I’m Derrick Peoples and I first started CrossFit in 2014, 3 years after completing my collegiate football career in 2011. I was working in my office at West Texas A & M University as an administrator, and the video of the clean and jerk ladder at the 2013 CrossFit games popped on my YouTube. I started CrossFit a week later in April and then went to watch my first regional competition a month later. From that regional competition in 2014, I knew that I wanted to make it to regionals.

What did you do after you decided that you wanted to set Regionals as your main goal?

My coach at the time told me that if I wanted to progress in CrossFit, that I needed to go train in Lubbock. I moved a few months later to train with my new coach, and have now begun personal training full time at the box as well. I told myself before the open this year if I qualified for regionals I would be ok with just training to live a healthy lifestyle, but I was wrong. I received a taste of regionals, and I want more.

You’re very rooted in the CrossFit Community, how are you making it better for others?

Something that I would like to do for the CrossFit community is to use the platform that I am starting to reach to inspire the younger generation of CrossFit athletes. As much as I would like to compete forever, I know that is not possible. This sport has changed my life and the only way to keep it evolving is to inspire, educate, and guide the younger group of CrossFitters coming into the sport.

Are you surrounded by a lot of younger athletes?

We have so many 18,19, 20, and 21-year-olds at my current box and to see their eyes when I teach them new pacing technique or how to approach a new workout, is just awesome. They learn something new and are completely mind blown. I enjoy that just as much as I enjoy winning any competition.

That’s pretty admirable! You mentioned wanting to get back to Regionals, what would that mean to you?

I am blessed with the opportunity to compete again at Regionals with my Team in 2018 in hopes of someday making it to the games, whether that is as an individual or on a team. We never know what life is going to toss our way, but to have to opportunity to compete at the CrossFit games would be at the top of my entire athletic career. It would be higher than any conference championship I have won, rivalry game, or powerlifting accomplishments.

What are your favorite products so far?

I love SWOLVERINE's Vanilla Whey Protein Isolate the very best. It’s pure protein without any of the fillers, extra carbs or sugars. Before this, I hadn’t found a company that I completely trusted. I know what is in my products and I know what I am putting in my body, that’s really important to me!
