Tell us a little about you…

Hi! I’m Ash Crawford and I grew up in Australia, Byron Bay to be precise. I grew up surfing and playing soccer and then got into competitive golf around the age of 12. I quickly became a stand out in Junior Tournaments and by the time I was 18 I was competing at the national Amateur level. I was recruited by a number of American Universities and settled on the University of North Texas for my golf scholarship.

What did you do when you moved to the USA?

I transferred to Central Connecticut where a got my business degree whilst competing and graduated Magna cum laude. I played some professional events for a while and state opens but found myself burnt out. I retired and moved to LA at 25 years old where I became a model and TV commercial actor for 4 years. I was in some large national and international modeling campaigns.

When did you find CrossFit?

Being an athlete for most all of my life I dabbled a bit in different sports before finding calisthenics. It was the first thing I found after a major car accident in 2009 that nearly destroyed my shoulder altogether. After living in LA, I moved to Massachusetts where I joined my first local CrossFit Affiliate.

Out of all the sports you could have chosen, why CrossFit?

After some hard time in life, I turned to the CrossFit community for mental and emotional support, more so than even physical. The community to me was huge and it helped me through a really tough time in my life.

What advice do you have for someone looking for a CrossFit box?

Keep looking until you find one that is right for you. Look for an environment in which you feel confident and motivated, not intimidated and unfit. Find a community of people that you can joke around with, laugh with, scream with, compete with, and one that you feel like makes you not only a better athlete but a better person, too. Ask the coaches questions and a lot of them! Make sure they're knowledgeable, certified, and looking to help you reach all of your goals and then set some more. And if you don't find this in the first box or after your first month? Go to a different box and try that one. You'll probably have to go through a few until you find the perfect fit.

How quickly did you pick up CrossFit?

CrossFit came to me pretty naturally. It fuels my competitive nature while challenges me in more ways than I ever thought possible.

What is a piece of advice you could offer others looking to get into CrossFit?

Honestly, whether someone is looking to get into CrossFit for the first time, or really anything in life in general, I say don’t half-ass anything. If your heart and mind are not in it, then why are you even doing it in the first place?
